Former U.S. Capitol Police Officers Endorse Jocelyn Benson for Governor

Today, former U.S. Capitol Hill officer Harry Dunn and former Sergeant Aquilino Gonnell endorsed Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson for Michigan Governor. These officers protected the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021 from violent protestors and Secretary Benson has been proud to stand with them in support of democracy and the rule of law since then.

“Jocelyn Benson is not only a transformational leader who stood up to defend democracy and protect Michiganders’ right to vote at a time when so many extremists and political bullies were attacking it, but she’s also a friend – I’m proud to support her in her run for Governor of Michigan,” said retired Capitol Police Sgt. Aquilino Gonell. “Jocelyn will be a governor focused on making sure government works for the people, not special interests. With chaos and division already being sown in Washington D.C., all eyes will be on Michigan to elect a strong Democratic governor like Jocelyn who will stand up to anyone to protect Michigan’s rights and freedoms, lower costs, and and better every child’s education.”

“I’m proud to be endorsing my friend Jocelyn Benson for Governor of Michigan. She has dedicated her life to public service. As Secretary of State, she helped transform services across Michigan and ran some of the most transparent and secure elections in the country. She’s also fought back against the callousness of this new Trump administration, one that’s trying to rewrite history around the events of the January 6th insurrection,” said former Capitol Hill officer Harry Dunn. “I’m standing with Jocelyn because I know that she is laser focused on actually getting things done for Michiganders. From fighting to lower costs, to cutting government red tape, to protecting our freedoms and liberties, she will be a champion for working families across the state.”

“No matter our politics, we should all be able to agree that the tragedy at our U.S. Capitol on January 6th should be condemned and heroes like Officer Dunn and Sgt. Aquilino should be celebrated. They represent what it means to fight back against people who undermine our democracy with violence and lies. I’m incredibly proud to have them with me in this fight to be Michigan’s next Governor,” said Jocelyn Benson. “As Secretary of State, I stood up to anyone – billionaires and bullies – to protect every Michiganders’ voice, and I’ll do it again as Governor.”
